New Mexico Tech Department of Computer Science and Engineering Policies
The following are the department’s policies for usage of our services. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of these policies, please contact the system administrators at sysadmin@cs.nmt.edu.
Network Usage Policy
Being committed to the pursuit of academic excellence and integrity, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at New Mexico Tech restricts the usage of its computer network (the network). Thus, the following rules apply to anyone who
uses any machine that is connected (either directly or by proxy) to the CSE department’s computer network. For example, it applies to all users of the CSE lab machines, the login server lovecraft.cs.nmt.edu, and to every machine connected to the CSE wireless network.
- No illegal activity
Activity which violates federal law, state law, or campus academic policies will be considered a direct breach of the network usage policy.
- No commercial usage
Use of the network to conduct business or other commercial activity is prohibited.
- No network vulnerability scanning
Usage of tools to map or scan the network for vulnerabilities, or usage of the network to do so on other networks is prohibited.
- No harassment
Usage of the network to harass, attack, or otherwise target a group or individual for malicious purposes is forbidden.
- No obscene material
Usage of the network to distribute or view obscene or sexually explicit material will not be tolerated.
- Wireless access only with proper permission
The department’s permission is needed to access the network in a wireless manner, including via a private access point. When granted, such permission is not transferable.
- Entertainment media has very low priority
Whenever the primary purpose of the network, i.e., academic work, is impeded by any entertainment media such as a video streaming service or a video game either by consuming excessive bandwidth or by creating a distraction, the department reserves the right to either block it or reduce its bandwidth.
By using the network, you agree to abide by the rules listed above. Consequences for violation would include revocation of network access privileges for the offending user(s) who may also be reported to the Disciplinary Committee of NMT and to the Campus Police in case of illegal activity.
